Meet your representatives

Tekweni Chataira
Elected

My name is Tekweni Chataira and I am standing for Summerland Primary School Board. I am an honest, hardworking mum who works well with others. I have been a parent at Summerland for 10 and 1/2 years. My 2 older sons are now thriving in high school, thanks to the great preparation they got at Summerland. My daughter is currently in year 3 and she is loving it. My husband and I migrated from Zimbabwe to Aotearoa, New Zealand in 2003 and right from the beginning we felt at home nothing has changed much since then other than that we have been blessed with 3 beautiful children. I am standing for the school board because I care for what happens at my daughter’s school and therefore, I would like to serve by using my skills on the Board. Before migrating to New Zealand I had studied BA information Science and I worked in various roles in the IT industry, for 3 years in Zimbabwe and for 11 years at Spark (then Telecom) New Zealand. In the last several years I went back to study and last year I finished my master’s degree in Theology. As a result my career has taken a different direction. Currently I am working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at Laidlaw College and I will soon be embarking on my doctoral research focusing on Hebrew and Greek Ancient texts (yes, I am a language geek :-) ). The school has an important role of ensuring that the students, our children, are prepared for their life past primary school level. This preparation is made possible by the hard work of the principals, teachers, and other school staff. I would really like to contribute towards this important work by serving on the school board, ensuring that students are achieving well, the parents have a voice and that the school staff are well cared for under the board leadership. If you vote for me, the skills I will bring from my experiences in my personal, professional and academic life include; IT skills, working well in a team, good communication skills both oral and written, critical thinking skills and the ability to work well with people from diverse backgrounds. Summerland Primary is a great school for our children and our community and, if you vote for me, it would be an honour for me to serve you on the board,

Steven Khov
Elected

Kia Ora, my name is Steven Khov and I am standing for the Summerland Primary School Board. I am Cambodian Chinese and married with two children, Isaac aged 7 and Katie aged 4. Isaac is a Year 3 student at Summerland and Katie is looking forward to joining him next year. Living in the Summerland community and being involved with the school shows that Summerland is an important part of the community and that Summerland Primary is much more than a school.

I am currently on the Board of Trustees and I am amazed at the results and output, not only from Blair, Barb and the leadership team, but the entire staff and Board at Summerland. We are truly very fortunate to have such a well-functioning school that delivers results and curriculum to our children. The ‘Summerland Values’ is what sets our school and students apart from others. These are the values that we uphold and factor into decision-making processes at Summerland. The innovation and development around our school is also inspirational.

Having been involved with projects around the school such as the introduction of Kindo, online stationery ordering, being on the committee for the Wild West Food Festival, fundraising for the bike track and volunteering during the production gave me an appreciation for the amount of support and community involvement the school has from our Summerland community.

For a day job, I utilise my degree in accounting and commercial law in co-owning and operating an insolvency and consulting practice (not very creatively) called Khov Jones. I am a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors and have a particular interest in governance. I believe that a school should be run like any business where the teachers are the employees and Blair and Barb are the ‘CEO’s’. It is sometimes overlooked that Summerland has over 650 students and over 75 staff!

Outside of school and work (with the time that doesn’t get taken up by weekend sport) time is often spent catching up with friends and family or enjoying a good action movie with a bowl of ice cream. A juicy steak on the BBQ also doesn’t go amiss!

I am proud to be on the Board at Summerland and it would be a privilege to have your support in continuing in this position to deliver ongoing success in our children's education.

Tanya Prag
Elected

My name is Tanya, I have two boys attending Summmerland. I have been a Summmerland parent for the past 5 years. I work as a Personal Assistant at New Zealand Home Loans in Henderson.

You can find me volunteering with road patrol and on the occasion helping out with the boys chosen sports, just recently, Hockey, which was great fun! I try and help out around school events where ever possible.

When I am not working or stopping traffic I enjoy getting out with my family on the weekend, exploring beautiful New Zealand. I do try and run the odd marathon but by no means do I call myself a runner.

This would be my first time applying for a trustee role with the school. I am passionate about our school and community and like any parent would only want the best for our children. I would love to have the opportunity to be a part of the board of trustees and it would be an absolute honour to be involved with the growth and strategic direction of our amazing school.

August Prescott
Elected

My name is August and I am the proud father of two Summerland kids. My son Christian who is year 5 this year at Summerland and also my daughter Jayda who is now in her first year of NCEA at St Dominics but started at Summerland in 2008. My wife, Cherie and I have always raised our kids on certain values, it’s no coincidence that these values are almost identical to the Summerland values of Respect, integrity, success, team and fun. I am a big believer that the relationship between parents and Summerland (and it’s staff) is a partnership like co-parenting. We both want the best for our children, we both want to support them to strive academically and socially and we both want to establish some strong fundamental values in our kids so that they continue to be great kids, fantastic teenagers (a tall order at times) and even better adults who can add value and give back to our community one way or another. I’ve always believed that our strong relationship with Summerland has been down to great communication and trust.

Outside of work, my wife and are are both elite taxi drivers to the kids, world class! Supporting them with dancing, swimming, tutoring, hockey and basketball lessons. We enjoying getting out of the house, out of Auckland and on the odd special occasion an overseas holiday when we can but also love vegeing out around the house when we don’t have anything on, trampoline basketball is always a family favourite at home.

What can I bring to the BOT? I’m not entirely sure to be honest. I have 18 years experience in financial services, 10 years in management roles. I like to think outside of the box and positively challenge the status quo to make sure we’ve explored all options. I have a super smart wife who comes as an additional resource, for free. I have a long history with Summerland so am driven to give my all to the school, the teachers and our kids.

I’m far from being a perfect parent but am improving daily, kids aren’t too bad either (their mothers side). With a strong parent and school partnership, I’m confident that we can put our kids in the best position to do some real good out there in the world!

Jonathan Sim
Elected

Thank you for taking the time to consider me as your school trustee. It would be a privilege to represent you, your children and the wider school community on the Summerland Board of Trustees.

My youngest son is currently in year 6 at Summerland, and my oldest son attended Summerland and is now continuing his education at Liston College. Some of you may have seen me around Summerland before or after school with my dog Dash – he is very noticeable!

As a current member of the Summerland Board of Trustees, I have enjoyed contributing to the direction of the school and witnessing the impact the board has on the wider school community.

In addition to my role as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees, I have also coached year 5 and 6 hockey, as well as coaching Summerland’s under 14 basketball team. I have also twice been selected as a parent helper at the year 5 and 6 camp held bi-annually on Kawau Island.

To me, being a school trustee allows me to contribute to making a positive difference to the education and well-being of our Summerland students. Being re-elected as a trustee would allow me to continue to positively participate, and contribute, to the achievement of all students at Summerland.

I am a qualified chartered accountant and have extensive experience in both financial and management accounting. My current role is as the Chief Operating Officer with an architecture, design and construction company. I believe that my finance experience allows me to work within the financial framework placed on our school, and that my experience in planning and strategy allows me to contribute positively to the direction of the board and school.

With this year seeing some of the current school trustees stepping down, I feel it would be beneficial for the school to maintain a level of continuity within the Summerland Board of Trustees. Having the opportunity to continue to act on your behalf as part of the Summerland Board of Trustees would be an honour. If I am re-elected, I commit to represent you, your children and the school community to the best of my ability.

Charlie Tevaga
Elected

Talofa My name is Charlie Tevaga and I am a current board member keen to be re-elected.

I have been the BOT chairman for the last 12 months, on the board for the last 3 years and involved in school gala’s, class trips, athletic days and turning sausages at discos since 2012 when my oldest boy started at Summerland.

Over the last 3yrs I have had the privilege of working alongside an amazingly dedicated group of board members whom I have learnt lots from. Those learnings and the practical experience are things I am keen to bring to the new team.

I have been a Service Manager with the Ministry of Social Development for the last 17 years and the most rewarding part of my role is the growth and development of my staff.

My community work involves coaching rugby at Massey Rugby Club and serving at our local catholic church.

My wife Kelli can be found in the coffee pod serving hot drinks on a ‪Friday morning‬ and we have two boys currently at Summerland and our oldest boy is now at Liston College.

We are proud Summerlanders, grateful to be part of this community and blessed to have met so many wonderful families who feel the same way about our school.   Both Kelli and I are passionate about our kids getting the best out of their Primary school experience; being involved in our school community and in particular The Board of Trustees provides me with a platform to be able to contribute to that passion not just for my own child but for all our Summerland tamariki (children).

Fa’afetai tele lava, (Thank you) Charlie Tevaga
